On the 25th January 1859 Dumfries was celebrating the Centenary of Robert Burns Birth with fetes banquets it was the biggest celebration ever in Dumfries. So different from the day he died and his son Maxwell was born. Then he was totally disregarded by the gentry of the town. Now sixty-five years later he was being celebrated as Scotland’s National Baird January 23rd 1839 Dumfries experienced hurricane force winds destroying and damaging much of the town’s buildings.
