King James VI of Scotland in 1598 erected the town of Sanquhar into a Royal Burgh of Scotland. Described as “anciently a free burgh of barony”. This deed actually related to its creation as a burgh in 148, and there is probably an even more ancient burgh unfortunately lost in time.
